German Nutcrackers
Nutcrackers have been made by generations.
They began as a functional item in the home. Because the access to food
was limited, the people ate nuts and needed a method to crack the shells.
After a period of years, the Nutcrackers became objects of art in their humble
homes and were used as decorative items. The Nutcracker also acted as a
symbol of good luck, guarding the door to keep the evil spirits of bad luck from
entering their houses. Our Nutcrackers are produced mainly in the Eastern
German town of Seiffen where the traditional carvers have perfected their trade
since the mid-17th century. Many of the designs can be traced to kings and
tradesmen from this era and reflect the culture and the historic values of the
people who have migrated to this country.
